What are excepted dangerous goods?

Within the logistics related to the transport of dangerous goods (ADR) there is a whole series of regulations and laws that must be followed in order to carry out these procedures correctly, thus ensuring that they do not involve any danger to citizens or the environment. However, there are certain exemptions from ADR in this regulation that are very calculated: one of them would be exempted dangerous goods.

Of the total volume of goods transported in this area, there is a portion that includes materials that have been packaged in small quantities and are generally destined for the end consumer. In these cases, we are not referring to considerable quantities that require very specific and careful handling due to the reaction they may cause: for goods that have been packed in reduced quantities, an exemption from the ADR applies, although they must meet a series of characteristics to be considered as such.

The first condition refers to the fact that these materials in no way exceed the quantities established by the ADR to remain within the exceptable margins. This will be taken into account both in terms of net quantity per package and the number of containers to be moved, which should not exceed 1000 units. Exempted dangerous goods must also comply with a series of requirements regarding their packaging: in addition to the need to use the appropriate containers in each case, these must be large enough to incorporate all the necessary information (brand, sender, receiver, etc.).

In addition, these packages must be properly marked and labeled with information on the type of excepted contents. Likewise, the material must be accompanied by documentation that includes the information related to the excepted dangerous goods, as well as the data referring to the number of packages to be transported. Finally, it will be mandatory that the workers who carry out the transport of these products have the necessary training.

The fact that certain products can be classified as “excepted dangerous goods” makes it possible to safely transport these types of materials without having to comply with the stricter ADR guidelines. The existence of these exceptions leads to savings without, in any case, sacrificing safe and efficient product distribution. Although it is always advisable to consult with ADR experts beforehand to find out if the goods you want to transport are one of the exceptions.
